Q: Is the city adequately addressing mass retirements in the police and fire divisions? How would you address this issue?

A: As retirements occur in any city department, this gives officials the opportunity to re-evaluate the necessity of each position. This should be determined on a case-by-case basis. With some positions it will be necessary to fill the vacancies immediately. Others may be deemed unnecessary. I’d leave these decisions to our expert managers within the Fire and Police divisions with the expectation that they’d adhere to cost reduction goals laid out by City Council.
